Whose Side Are You On? The media and polarisation

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

A panel discussion with Will Lynch, Nadine Schildhauer, Shaheen Wacker Moderated by: Inga Barthels In the last decades, media and journalism have changed drastically with the increased use of internet and social networks. Social media usage has led to radical changes in how information is gathered and disseminated. Despite the democratising aspects of how the information is shared and accessed, social media paved the way for widespread disinformation and online extremism. Today, many journalists have a much wider reach than ever before, they have more independence and possibility to directly interact with their audience. However, the accuracy of their sources and the loss of control over the information is one of the biggest threats in the newly conquered online arena. How do journalists verify and have control over the information they share? How do they form opinions when they are pressured to chase likes and comments? How does increasingly polarised online environment affect journalism? The panel discussion ‘Whose Side Are You On?’ seeks to find answers to these questions and develop strategies for both journalists and the public to avoid polarisation and find ways to create an open environment that can harbour a plurality of opinions. Listening Work with Dr. Marie Thompson

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

A talk and discussion workshop with Dr. Marie Thompson Listening is often presented as a crucial political act: it is a vital component of activism, remembrance and community-building. As such, listening has been at the heart of many ethico-aesthetic practices, including acoustic ecology’s ear-cleaning exercises and Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening. Yet these important figurations tend not to address listening’s intersections with social reproduction. This talk/workshop assumes two things to be true at once. Listening is a key component of feminist activism and social justice. Listening is also unevenly anticipated, unevenly distributed, often undervalued, readily exploited and frequently commodified. In light of this, I connect listening to recent debates about emotional labour, considering the implications for understandings of sonic affect and demands for us to listen more. In recognising the ways in which listening helps to reproduce, rather than challenge, the inequalities that constitute social life, this talk/workshop aims to re-evaluate the politics of listening in a way that makes space for listening’s ambivalence. Up All Night: Parenting in the music industry

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

A talk by Nina Hynes, Roxy Jordan, Xeno Genesis It’s essential to address uncomfortable questions concerning parenthood and musical careers. The working life of a parent in the music industry is often different from parents in other fields and communication is key to avoid isolation and burnout. It is essential to develop new strategies to be creative both at work and at home and to ask for help when it’s needed. Overcoming challenges with creative solutions can be extremely rewarding and motivational for both parents and children and many music industry professionals are superheroes in this regard. Through this event, we will share our experiences and coping strategies, discuss what works and most importantly – give support to each other. We must articulate our expectations of parenthood and how this commitment affects our careers and identities. How do we keep up the good work, stay sane, juggle our responsibilities, our relationships and our time, all while managing our careers and families? Attend on Facebook

Turkey in Focus: Music as a Form of Resistance in Times of Oppression

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

Panel Discussion with EKİN SANAÇ and BERNA GÖL (Kim Ki O), Işıl Kılkış (Delüks), Melis Nots (Queerwaves). Moderated by Merve Namlı Electronic dance music and DJing has its roots in 60s and 70s, when people who were marginalized due to their class, race, gender or sexuality found inspiration for their own strategies of resistance from the club scenes in the United States, Jamaica and Europe. These semi-private spaces became extremely important areas of protest in the times when public visibility for these groups was confronted with violence. A similar pattern can be observed among queer communities in Turkey these days. During the Gezi protests when queer activists claimed the streets of Istanbul and right after Istanbul Pride reached a record number of participants in solidarity with other movements in Turkey, many new LGBT associations and groups flourished around the country and political parties started to included LGBT rights in their agendas. These gains, which are the outcomes of decades of queer activism in Turkey, once again challenged by the state with the declaration of State of Emergency that extremely limited public visibility of marginalized groups and street activism since July 2016. These days, when existence of queer identities are systematically erased from the public sphere, queer communities in Turkey find solidarity in clubs; gathering as a family, dancing together and creating their own music, supporting each other financially and emotionally. Music acts as form of resistance that connects people through rhythm and lyrics. In this panel together with our guests from Turkey who are active in the queer music scene, we will discuss the unique potential of music for social transformation and how it has been leveraged as a form of queer resistance in the times of oppression in Turkey.

15:00 — 16:00

Should we get rid of identity politics?

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

A talk by Dr. Emilia Roig of the Centre for Intersectional Justice Should we get rid of identity politics and move beyond the very categories that are the basis for social hierarchies and inequalities? Or shall we continue to think, talk and frame oppression, inequality, (in)visiblity and domination along these lines? Identities are complex, flexible, multiple, and most importantly are a societal, historical and political mirror of who we really are. They say more about the way we are perceived than about our intrinsic selves. They can be mobilised for very different purposes and can fulfil various, sometimes opposite functions. Can we move on and see them as a remnant from the past or do we still need them to achieve our political goals? Attend on Facebook

16:00 — 17:00

Sound Minds: Reclaiming mental health

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

A growing number of artists and professionals in the music industry are vocalising the hurdles they experience in maintaining physical and mental wellbeing, as they are often faced with long working hours, unstable and demanding working conditions and economic precarity. Though there are more institutional support systems than ever that address the pressures of working in creative industries, artists naturally develop their own strategies to cope with the pressures of life and work. Drag Saves Lives: nonbinary representation in drag

Böhmischer Kirchensaal Rixdorf

Panel Discussion with Martini Cherry, Olympia Bukkakis, Adrian Blount (Goddx Noirphiles), Maria Salwasser (Mascha), and moderated by PANSY. Drag has been performed for centuries in Berlin, flourishing especially in the ’20s and ’30s between the world wars, hand in hand with the city’s provocative cabarets. Built on its long history of queer culture, Berlin today is home to one of the most vibrant drag scenes in the world. Many performers find a stage to express themselves and a supporting community regardless of their identities. Drag performances in this city are unapologetic, bold and political. Moderated by the legendary Pansy, Drag Saves Lives will speak with superstars of the Berlin drag scene – Martini Cherry, Olympia Bukkakis, Adrian Blount (Goddx Noirphiles) and Maria Salwasser (Mascha) – about how to make drag more accessible to young performers and inclusive to all communities. Moving beyond the discussions of what drag is and who is allowed to do it, we will talk about the art form as a method of empowerment for everyone who is willing to break boundaries and embrace inclusion.
