Melis Nots
Melis Nots will be a panelist in the roundtable discussion “Music as a Form of Resistance in Times of Oppression in Turkey” on Friday 2 November in Böhmischer Kirchensaal. For tickets, click here.
After working many years at a lesbian club in Istanbul, Melis Nots opened Şarlo with her partner in 2013. Inspired by their mutual desire for a queer clubbing scene in the city, the club did not only leave remarkable stories of wild parties and colorful memories for the queer community, it also served as a sanctuary to LGBTI people during the Gezi protests. After closing the club, Melis hasn’t stopped being a community builder, and she continued organizing queer parties since 2015. While working at Charmenko (international booking agency for live music events) as a production manager she also started Queerwaves, an event series in Istanbul with her dj friends designed for people to come together and empower each other through music and dance. She believes that even though there are not many LGBTI clubs left at the city, they can still throw a good party at any place and make it as queer as it can be.
